Taken together, downtown Manteo has done something that Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills have been trying to do with new construction for years: it has added density to a walkable core without changing the scale of the streets.

What's New Between the Docks and Budleigh Street
The single most talked-about opening on the waterfront is Salt & Cypress Kitchen and Cocktails, a sibling-owned dining destination on the Manteo waterfront that captures the essence of coastal Southern hospitality. Salt & Cypress also offers catering and private event options, which matters if you are the person who ends up hosting the extended family in December and does not want to cook for fourteen.
A block inland, the old Hotel Manteo has come back. The new ground-floor restaurant is a celebration of craft, comfort, community, and conversation, located in the newly restored Hotel Manteo, serving up stone-oven pizzas and hearth-fired skillets. For residents who have watched that building sit quietly for years, a working kitchen on the ground floor is the update.
Two doors from the boardwalk on Sir Walter Raleigh Street, Sound Side Studio is a group fitness studio offering Spin & Sculpt, Pilates, Strength, Yoga, and BXR cardio kickboxing, open Monday through Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sundays 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at 103 Sir Walter Raleigh Street. Manteo has not had a full class-based studio within walking distance of the waterfront before. That is a real change in daily life for anyone who has been driving to Kill Devil Hills for a 6 a.m. class.
Downtown Books, Roanoke Island's only independent bookstore, has a new owner for the 2026 season, with staff who help each reader find the right book across local history and fiction for all ages. Independent bookstores do not usually change hands quietly; this one did.
The Saturday Market Has a New Regular
The Manteo Market on Saturdays picked up a coffee and matcha trailer this year. Sunrise Social Club, the Outer Banks' newest coffee and matcha trailer, sets up at the First Flight Markets every Tuesday, the Soundside Market every Wednesday, and the Manteo Market every Saturday. If you have kids who need a reason to walk over on a Saturday morning, that is your reason.
For heavier produce runs, the tradition still holds across the causeway. The Secotan Market in Wanchese is the local farmers market to browse on a Saturday fall morning. Wanchese in the morning, Manteo in the afternoon is a reasonable rhythm for the season.

The anchor is still the monthly First Friday. This monthly event highlights the area's businesses, restaurants, and galleries, and the First Friday in Manteo is held every month on the initial Friday of the month as a street festival. Nothing else on the calendar delivers that many locals on foot in one evening.
The bluegrass weekend has become the fall's biggest music draw. The Bluegrass Island Festival runs at Roanoke Island Festival Park with programming across September 5–7, 2026, and this popular festival brings some of the best music of the year to Roanoke Island in October as well. The Halloween side of the calendar has a specifically Manteo flavor. The Night of 1587 Pumpkins attempts to light 1,587 jack-o-lanterns in celebration of the year English settlers came to Roanoke Island, with trick-or-treating, contests, and pumpkins. It is one of the few Halloween events on the Outer Banks that is genuinely tied to the place it happens.
Later in the fall, the town leans into two things it does better than anywhere else on the barrier islands. OBX Veterans Week honors veterans and their families through live concerts, activities, and arts in downtown Manteo, and the Wings Over Water Encore is a weekend-long celebration of the wintering waterfowl found at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and beyond, a way for birders to discover the off-season beauty of the area. The Encore is the one to circle if you have not been paying attention to the sound in winter.
Then the parade closes the year. The Manteo Christmas Parade is a time-honored tradition that attracts participants and spectators from across the Outer Banks. If you live on the island, you already know to be on the courthouse side of the street by 9:30 a.m.
Fishing tournaments still pull the docks apart. The Alice Kelly Memorial Tournament has been an Outer Banks tradition for more than 30 years, and the Pirates Cove Billfish Tournament brings offshore fishing to the Manteo waterfront docks. For a morning version of the loop, swap in Front Porch Cafe, a locally-owned coffee shop for a caffeine or decaf fix with a pastry, free wifi, and a favorite of locals, then head to the market for a Sunrise Social Club matcha.
Why This Matters for the People Who Already Live Here
The Outer Banks does not usually see this kind of density added in a single year. New oceanfront restaurants come and go up and down the barrier islands. New for 2026, Gather at Village Beach Club in Nags Head is one of the only oceanfront spots on the Outer Banks where you can get a full-service meal right on the beach, which is a real addition to Nags Head. But it is one restaurant added to a corridor that already had many.
Downtown Manteo added a restaurant, a hotel restaurant, a fitness studio, a new-owner bookstore, and a weekly market vendor inside a five-block walking radius. For a resident, the practical effect is that the number of things you can do on a Friday night without driving over the causeway has roughly doubled.
